LEGHORN ARMY DEPOT, Italy — The 3rd Battalion, 405th Army Field Support Brigade received another request for a shipment of humanitarian supplies to Haiti from the U.S. Agency for International Development earlier this month. This shipment was the fifth shipment of humanitarian supplies that the battalion shipped to Haiti.

“We received a request from USAID to send 2,000 more rolls of plastic sheeting to support their humanitarian relief operations in Haiti as soon as possible,” said Alberto Chidini, who oversees the program for the battalion. “As soon as the materials were packed, the shipment was trucked via nine vehicles to Liege Airport in Belgium for further transport to Haiti.”

The battalion has been regularly supporting humanitarian efforts in Haiti since early January when the country was struck by a magnitude 7.0 earthquake. To date, the battalion has shipped thousands of pounds of humanitarian supplies to Haiti, including four 10,000 liter water bladders, eight water purification units, more than 58,000 10-liter water containers, more than 30,000 personal hygiene kits, and more than 6,500 rolls of plastic sheeting to Haiti. USAID requested the battalion’s support for each shipment.

“We consider ourselves a partner to USAID in their humanitarian relief efforts,” said Lt. Col. Roger McCreery, commander of the 3rd Bn., 405th AFSB. “We take great pride in being able to deliver the materials they need in a quick and efficient manner, doing our part to alleviate the suffering of the people as quickly as possible. We will continue to support USAID’s relief efforts in Haiti as we receive requests for assistance.”

The 3rd Bn., 405th AFSB is responsible for the storage and maintenance of USAID emergency humanitarian assistance commodities under an interagency agreement between the Army and the U.S. State Department.
