Sid Schneider, Lawrence Malakhoff

KEY WORDS: Section 508, accessibility, screen readers, online forms, online tables

ABSTRACT

Federal accessibility regulations require that all Federal information technology be designed to provide disabled people with a level of access equivalent to that enjoyed by people who have no disability. This paper investigates how persons who cannot see may be affected by the number of drop-down menus in online forms and the number of rows and columns in online tables. A total of 20 participants who cannot see carried out four tasks using online forms and four tasks using online tables. The forms had respectively two, four, six or eight drop-down menus. The tables had respectively two rows and two columns, two rows and 15 columns, 15 rows and two columns, or 15 rows and 15 columns Results from this study and their implications for optimal designs for online forms and tables are discussed.
