Carter Pushes for Vigorous Court Action in Wake of Holder Contempt Congress

(WASHINGTON, DC) – U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has been found in Contempt of Congress by the U.S. House of Representatives by an overwhelming bipartisan vote today.

“The American public and the families of the estimated 152 people killed with weapons that came from the U.S. Justice Department deserve to know the full truth of what happened,” said Carter, a former Texas judge.  “If criminal wrongdoing is found, those responsible – including Mr. Holder – need to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.  Based on Mr. Holder’s refusal to comply with congressional subpoenas this is the only recourse left to seek justice.  This Congress now needs to continue pressure for these charges to be addressed in federal court action.”

Holder was charged both civilly and criminally.   The criminal charge passed 255-67, while the civil charge was approved by a 259-95 margin, with 15 Democrats joining 239 Republicans.   While the Obama Administration is expected to refuse to prosecute the criminal charge, the civil charges must be addressed in federal court.
