4/6/2011 - Damaged in the March 11 earthquake and resulting tsunami, Sendai Airport reopened to military fixed-wing aircraft March 16 thanks to the efforts of Japanese civilians, Japan Self-Defense Force members and U.S. military members. Since then, the airport has become a logistics hub for relief and recovery efforts. Japanese authorities plan to reopen the airport to commercial traffic in the future.
