FDA Employee Health and Personal Hygiene Interactive Resource Disk

FDA Employee Health and Personal Hygiene Interactive Resource DiskThe Employee Health and Personal Hygiene Interactive Resource Disk was developed to assist retail food establishments in preventing sick food employees or conditional employees from working with food in the retail food establishment setting. The disk is an accompaniment to the Employee Health and Personal Hygiene Handbook. The disk contains an Employee Health Interactive Tool and several FDA resource documents such as the FDA Food Code, Employee Health and Personal Hygiene Handbook, satellite broadcast on “Using Employee Health and Personal Hygiene Measures,” and the Oral Culture Learner Educational Materials related to employee health and personal hygiene.

The interactive tool can be downloaded below. If you would like to order the disk please send your order request to cfsanpublicationRe@fda.hhs.gov and ask for publication number IFS 11.

The Employee Health Interactive Tool can be used to quickly determine the appropriate course of action to take when dealing with a sick employee.  The tool provides information on whether the person in charge should notify the regulatory authority, whether to have the employee remain at work or sent home, and when to allow the employee to return to work based on the provisions of the FDA Food Code. It focuses on the symptoms often associated with transmission of disease by food employees including, vomiting, diarrhea, jaundice, sore throat with fever, and infected wounds.  The pathogens identified by the Centers for Disease Control as having high infectivity and that are easily transmitted to food by sick employees include, Norovirus, Hepatitis A virus, Salmonella Typhi, Shigella spp., and Escherichia coli (E. coli) O157:H7 or other Enterohemorrhagic or Shiga toxin-producing E. coli.

The Employee Health and Personal Hygiene Interactive Resource Disk is intended to assist the person in charge in dealing with a sick food employee or a conditional employee in preventing the spread of foodborne diseases.  It is not meant to be used as a tool to diagnose foodborne disease or as a substitute for consultation with a regulatory authority or a health practitioner.  The disk is not to be used as a substitute for state and local regulatory requirements.
