Since its creation was announced in February 2007 there has been plenty of conventional wisdom about U.S. Africa Command what it is, what it will do, why it was established. This conventional wisdom is seldom sourced and often speculative, but it's so widely repeated that journalists regurgitate these myths as fact.
Here's a good example:
Myth: U.S. Africa Command is going to put its headquarters in Africa and continues to actively seek headquarters presence and/or basing in Africa. Recent news stories have been so bold as to identity a specific site in southern Morocco as the future location of the commands headquarters.
The Facts: U.S. Africa Command headquarters will remain in Stuttgart for the foreseeable future. As General William "Kip" Ward, Commander, U.S. Africa Command, said in a recent interview:
"There are no plans to move the headquarters at this time. We are doing our very best to ensure the programs we are executing are being conducted and carried out the most effective way. That's the focus. If down the road, there are notions of having some portions of the command relocated, that's a decision to be made later."
The fact is, we believe that what we do is much more important than where we do it from. The command has nonetheless inherited a small but meaningful U.S. military presence in several African nations from the three regional commands that that previously coordinated U.S. military activities in Africa. This includes Camp Lemonier in Djibouti, as well as Department of Defense personnel assigned to U.S. Embassies and diplomatic missions to coordinate Defense Department programs supporting U.S. foreign policy.
