NOAA’s National Weather Service ranks April 2011 as the most active tornado month on record with 750 tornadoes across the U.S. There were a reported 361 fatalities. The April 27 “Super Outbreak” spawned four intensely destructive EF-5 and 11 EF-4 tornados across Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi and Tennessee. These storms launched an immediate response from the whole community, which included local, state, and federal agencies, voluntary, faith-based and community groups, the private sector and the public.
FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Since being designated for federal disaster assistance in May, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Commonwealth of Kentucky have approved $40,986,872 in assistance to Kentuckians affected by the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding from April 12 to May 20. FEMA has approved more than $7.7 million in Individual Assistance (IA) and $932,677 in Other Needs
FRANKFORT, Ky. -- Since the beginning of the recovery effort from the spring storms in Kentucky, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been assisted by a pool of 17 local residents hired to work with FEMA staff to provide disaster assistance to the Commonwealth. The people hired locally come to FEMA with varied backgrounds but share a common goal to help their fellow Kentuckians get back on their feet. They joined the FEMA team following the severe storms, tornadoes and flooding that hit the Commonwealth between April 12 and May 20.
