Petty Officer 2nd Class Garrett Stephan is with the U.S. Naval Forces Europe - Africa Band which performed in Accra, Ghana as part of a two-week, three-country engagement. The performances, supporting the Africa Partnership Station, feature the NAVEUR-NAVAF Band and local musicians.
Today was our first day of performances in Accra, Ghana it was quite an experience! The brass quintet performed a concert along with the rock band. We also performed separately as the brass quintet at two other gigs. The best part of my day was the concert we played at Thema's Community 7 Primary School. This was the first time in my career that I have been absolutely overrun with yelling, dancing and excited little kids! The students were so happy to hear some jazz that they even participated in a little "pretend marching band practice" alongside of us. As excited as our audiences were about jazz, the song that really brings them in every time is Nigeria's "Sweet Mother". Whenever we start off this tune, the kids all start singing along and dancing in a matter of seconds.
At Accra Technical Training Center I felt like a rock star. Our vocalist, Musician 2nd Class Kori Gillis, had the crowd screaming, dancing and calling for an encore. Any student in attendance will tell you that this was a "school day" they won't forget for a long time!
