Singapore believes in doing our part to work with the international community in the global struggle against the scourge of terrorism, and to support international efforts to restore peace and stability in Iraq and Afghanistan. To this end, the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has made contributions to Iraq and Afghanistan in ways where we can be useful and where it is within our means.
Singapore's Contribution to Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom Since 2003, Singapore has sent police trainers, a C-130, three deployments of a KC-135 and three deployments of a Landing Ship Tank (LST) in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. Our KC-135 tanker deployments to the Gulf have also flown missions in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Our fourth deployment of a KC-135 tanker aircraft is operating in the Gulf for a period of three months from Apr to Jul 07. Singapore's Contribution to Provincial Reconstruction Teams in AfghanistanSingapore has also contributed a humanitarian assistance team to the New Zealand Defence Force's Provincial Reconstruction Team in Bamiyan Province, Afghanistan. The SAF sent a 5-man medical team to Bamiyan for a period of three months starting in May 07. The team's objective is to establish and operate a dental clinic at Bamiyan Hospital. The team will bring specialised equipment, set up the clinic, and provide dental services to the local community. The SAF personnel will also train local Afghan staff to run the clinic on a long-term basis. Following the dental project, the SAF will also be sending a 5-man engineering team to Afghanistan from Aug to Oct 07, to oversee bridge construction and repair work in Bamiyan District.
