Petty Officer 2nd Class Kori Gillis is with the U.S. Naval Forces Europe - Africa Band which performed in Accra, Ghana as part of a two-week, three-country engagement. The performances, supporting the Africa Partnership Station, feature the NAVEUR-NAVAF Band and local musicians.
Today we had the opportunity to play for the U.S. Embassy staff here in Accra, Ghana. They were so appreciative, maybe because they don't hear live American music in Ghana very often. After the gig, we grabbed some lunch in the embassy's cafeteria. Relaxing at the embassy made me feel like I was back home in the States. Our next gig was for the Ghanaian International Press Centre. It never ceases to amaze me how much energy Ghanaian audiences have, they were literally on their feet for most of the show! Seeing their liveliness and enthusiasm pushes our band and gives us even more energy to perform the show. At the end of the day, I feel so grateful to be able to share my love of music with the world. It is so rewarding to bring happiness and enjoyment into people's lives, even if it's just for our ninety minute show.
