Call For Papers: Household Financial Stability Research Symposium

Restoring Household Financial Stability after the Great Recession: Why Balance Sheets Matter

PDF Version

The Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis invites the submission of research papers to be presented at a symposium titled “Restoring Household Financial Stability after the Great Recession: Why Balance Sheets Matter.”

The event—organized in conjunction with the Center for Social Development at Washington University in St. Louis—will be held at the Bank from Feb. 5-7, 2013.

The symposium will highlight the critical role of household balance sheets in achieving sustained economic growth and macroeconomic financial stability.

Presenters will provide updated data and research on household balance sheets, as well as a framework for understanding the determinants and implications of household financial stability. Sessions will investigate the links between household balance sheets and attainment of homeownership, economic mobility and educational goals, among others.

Further, the symposium will draw out the connections between household balance sheets and macroeconomic outcomes, including economic growth and the transmission of monetary policy to the economy.

Specifically, the organizers are considering empirical, theoretical and policy papers on emerging balance sheet issues from the following perspectives:

  • Balance sheets and household level outcomes.
  • Balance sheets and macroeconomic performance.

Presentations will consist of papers resulting from the call, as well as invited papers. Accepted papers will be presented at the symposium and published in the Review, the research journal of the St. Louis Fed. Authors will receive support for all travel expenses and accommodations.

To be considered for the symposium, please submit a detailed abstract (750-1,000 words) in PDF format by Sept. 24, 2012, to HFS.Symposium@stls.frb.org.

Authors of accepted papers will be notified by Oct. 15, 2012, and completed drafts must be submitted by Jan. 4, 2013.
