While providing medical support for the "Africa Endeavor" Exercise in Libreville, Gabon, from 25 September to 9 October 2009, I was honored to work closely with three fantastic Gabonese medical colleagues. Initially concerned our cultural and language differences might be a barrier to us working effectively together, we soon realized we are united in our profession. They recruited me to help communicate with their English-speaking patients and I consulted them regarding the care of American participants in Africa. They were well organized and very professional. A highlight of our time together was the cultural day visit to the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Lambarene, Gabon. One of my colleagues celebrated the return to his own birthplace, the historic hospital where the German-born Nobel laureate treated thousands. Our work together providing health support to exercise participants from 25 African nations as well as the U.S. is an example of the improved interoperability fostered by the activities of U.S. Africa Command personnel on the continent of Africa.
