Visit with Inspector General, Ethiopian National Defense Force

As the new Chief of Inspector General Outreach for the Command, I met with the fairly newly formed (from a year ago) Inspector General (IG) of the Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) in Addis Ababa last week (March 19, 2009). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss their request for assistance from us in developing the professionalism of their IG.
Brigadier General Tsegay Tesema and his staff gave me, the incoming and outgoing Combined Joint Task Force-Horn of Africa IGs, and the Chief of the Office of Security Cooperation/Ethiopia a very thorough and thought-out presentation on areas where they would like to have help in developing.
In general, the ENDF IG would like to enhance its inspection capabilities and its proactive safety measures and reporting. Since this activity is firmly in our lane, I will now work with U.S. AFRICOM's Strategies, Plans, and Programs directorate and the OSC in beginning an IG Outreach relationship with the ENDF IG.
Personally, I believe the experience will be rewarding for all involved. While in Addis, I also had the opportunity to receive several briefings from the HOA IG and the OSC on activities that they have been involved in -- not only in Ethiopia, but throughout the Horn of Africa. The exchange has enhanced my appreciation for what the U.S. Africa Command is doing in the field and I am glad to now be part of it!
