DJIBOUTI Years ago, even the day I enlisted in the Army, I never would have guessed I would find myself in a classroom in the middle of the city of Djibouti. Djiboutian soldiers, medical personnel like myself, were practicing their skills and we were developing a professional, if not friendly, relationship. But the bond between America and Djibouti runs deeper than mere training exercises. The relationship is complex and critical.
On the surface, the two societies appear to differ in many ways: language, customs, religion, just to name a few. But I can attest, after having worked side by side with Djiboutian soldiers, that we are much more alike than different. Most of all, we value our families, we are proud of our culture and history and we strive for a better future. As we continue to work together, we build a framework based upon our commonalities and we celebrate, and respect, our uniqueness.
During our recent medical course, my team of Army medics partnered with Djiboutian medics to enhance battlefield medical care. Some of the lessons we Americans shared came from the very streets to which the Djiboutian soldiers are preparing to deploy. Every class was a discussion, every exercise a team event, and we all parted each day with a greater understanding of one another.
The relationship between Americans and Djiboutians, like any relationship, is not one-sided. As we continue to work together we move down a common path in unison. I feel very fortunate for having had the opportunity to partner with our host nation.
