  Hiring Managers Overview

Recruiting the best employees for your agency is one of the most important and pressing activities you perform as a manager. While you are responsible for specific hiring decisions within your project area, you are not alone in this process. Department of Defense (DoD) Human Resources (HR) professionals are available to help. By working together to attract the best available candidates, we expedite the hiring process and ensure that the Department will continue to attract quality workers.

The Four Phases Of The Hiring Process

1, Plan to Hire, 2, Attract the Candidate, 3, Make a Decision, 4, Shape Early Experiences.

  1. Plan To Hire
Planning for hiring requires sound strategy and careful implementation. This is the first step in taking your agency's strategic human capital plan and mapping your specific work force requirements to your mission.

  2. Attract The Candidate
Attracting quality candidates is aided by accurate and understandable descriptions of job duties, responsibilities, and required qualifications. This step will help you in selecting up-to-date position descriptions, identifying hiring options, and creating clear and simple job announcements. You'll also begin planning your interview schedule with your HR Professional here.

  3. Make A Decision
This step includes everything from reviewing resumes, interviewing candidates, reviewing references, making hiring decisions, and making your tentative job offer. Involving your HR Professional throughout this step can eliminate problems and ease the process.

  4. Shape Early Experiences
A smooth transition into the new job increases employee productivity and retention. Research shows most employees decide if they're going to stay or go within the first six months, so be sure to make a positive first impression. This final step will walk you through the actions to take to prepare for your new arrival through their first year.
