U.S. Africa Command Represented at New Laboratory Openings in Cameroon
Col Victor Folarin, Chief, International Health Programs, Medical Division, Operations and Logistics Directorate, U.S. Africa Command Headquarters, Stuttgart, Germany travelled to Cameroon November 8-14, 2009.
The purpose of the travel was to represent U.S. Africa Command, the Command Surgeon, and the Medical Division at two Infectious Disease Surveillance Laboratory openings. The two laboratories came about as a joint partnership venture between U.S. Global Emerging Infections Surveillance Service (US GEIS), the US Army Medical Research Unit in Kenya (USAMRID-K), The Johns Hopkins University affiliated Global Viral Forecast Initiative (GVFI), Cameroon's Military Medical Command, the Henry Jackson Foundation, and The University of Buea under the auspices of Cameroon's Ministry of Higher Education.
Both laboratories are similar in capabilities and are located about 6-8 hours apart by road across the Southeast and Southwestern Cameroon. Both are housed in newly renovated buildings and equipped with modern Medical Laboratory Equipment obtained through the sponsors and with significant help from the U.S. Ambassador, Her Excellency, Ambassador Janet E. Garvey.
The laboratory brings cutting-edge technology to Infectious Disease Surveillance and will contribute immensely to identification of viral and other infectious agents most prominent in the area; thus enhancing Force Health Protection preparedness for our military personnel conducting operations in the area.

Winning the hearts and minds of Africans and hopefully African nations leadership are critical in establishing credibility, remove un-informed suspicions, and finally the location of the headquarter of US AFRICA COMMAND on ground within the Africa continent.
