On Friday, January 7, 2010, a U.S. Africa Command Public Affairs team visited the Mannheim Headquarters of American Forces Network-Europe (AFN-E). Colonel Bigelow met us upon arrival, and introduced us to George Smith who provided us an excellent tour of the broadcast facilities.
During the tour we stopped by to see Staff Sergeant Chad "the Hitman" Highland, one of the favorite on-air personalities of AFN. Staff Sergeant Highland was just finishing his morning show as we walked in. As he came to his music break, he offered one of our team members, Caroline Childress, the opportunity to engage in an on-the-air discussion with him about a wide-ranging variety of topics.
Colonel Bigelow provided us an excellent AFN Command Briefing. Following the briefing we discussed ways that AFRICOM and AFN-E can partner to better get our messages out to our various audiences.
Additionally, we discussed several AFRICOM Public Service Announcement (PSA) ideas that are in the works at AFN-E, and will be airing soon on the network. Mr. Dan Robinson has been our go-to make it happen teammate at AFN; I cannot thank him and his Command Information Team enough for the great work they do for us.
Finally, I want to thank the entire staff of AFN-E for all they did to make our visit a productive one. This also includes all that they do each and every day to produce high quality entertainment (radio, television and web-based) for civilians, military service-members and their families.
