On November 3, 2010, I visited U.S. Africa Command headquarters to present ideas for offering Red Cross support to Africa. While I was there, I also attended a meeting in reference to the victims of this weekend's warehouse fire, which caused nearly 100 military and civilian families to lose all their household goods.
The fire happened in a warehouse north of Stuttgart, in a town called Schwieberdingen, which serves as the main storage center for U.S. property shipments in Stuttgart. A hotline was set up by the U.S. Army Garrison to assist the families who were affected.
The Garrison is currently working on establishing a mechanism for families wishing to make donations to the families affected by this disaster. It is expected that a press release will come out of the Garrison sometime tomorrow and the press release will be posted on the Garrison website. There will be options for individuals wishing to make a financial donation as well as an option for individuals wishing to donate goods.
As you may know, the Family Assistance Center was activated yesterday in response to this event. The Red Cross after-hours emergency communications offices were utilized during the day to serve as an information hotline for families to call in, to determine whether or not their household goods were among those that had been affected.
I would like to share a special thanks with Valerie Lubin, AFRICOM's chief of Quality of Life, for providing me the opportunity to meet with General Ward to discuss potential avenues for Red Cross support to service members assigned on the African continent. We look forward to engaging our Red Cross chapters back home in adopting AFRICOM and collecting comfort and care items to be distributed to the troops and their families who are so far from home. We are also looking into the possibility of providing Health and Safety training, as well as disaster preparedness training to our troops and their families. As always, the Red Cross stands ready to provide emergency communication services for our troops and to serve as a conduit for providing access to financial assistance on behalf of the Aid Societies.

For assistance after duty hours, call the U.S. Army Garrison Installation Operation Center at DSN 431-3742; CIV 07031-15-3742.
