AFRICOM Disaster Preparedness Program Conducts Engagement in Kenya
The U.S. Africa Command Disaster Preparedness Program conducted a key leader engagement in Kenya on September 10-11, 2012 with the Commander of the Kenyan Rapid Deployment Capability (KRDC) force, the Director of the Kenyan National Disaster Operations Center (NDOC) and with other civil and military personnel.
The meeting, supported by members of the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the LSU Disaster Science Management Department forged a strategic alliance with The KRDC and NDOC for the delivery of comprehensive HAZMAT first responder training and equipment.
This alliance will provide a first-of-its-kind HAZMAT capability at a time when Kenya's energy, chemical and shipping industries are growing. The initial training will instruct thirty KRDC soldiers in HAZMAT technician skills such as hazard surveillance, identification, safety, clean up and the use of protective equipment and monitoring devices.
Ten Disaster Managers from the NDOC will receive training in hazard management. The instruction will consist of five week long modules with both classroom, hands on training and hazardous incident field exercises. In addition to providing domestic disaster response, the KRDC is responsible for regional deployments and peace keeping assignments in East Africa.
At the conclusion of this historic engagement, the US team, led by the Disaster Preparedness Program Manager, Lorraine Rapp, planted trees outside the KRDC headquarters in Nairobi. The group was told by the KRDC Commander, COL Isaac Muchendu, "In Kenya, trees symbolize life. With the delivery of this HAZMAT capability you are helping to protect and preserve life in Kenya."
