Historic Context for Historic Period Archaeological Sites on Virginias Coastal Plain (PDF), Fact Sheet (Legacy 05-262) (PDF)

This one page summary describes a project that in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources (VDHR), developed scientific standards of significance for historic period archaeological sites that date from 1830 to 1914 on the Coastal Plain of Virginia. This study is reviewing the relevant archaeological research conducted on the Coastal Plain of Virginia (both academic and that driven by compliance needs) and determining the current state of knowledge. This will allow sites on DoD installations within the Coastal Plain of Virginia to view the historic period archaeological sites under their control within a larger context.

Model Evaluation of Paleo Indian Archeological Sites on DoD Installations with Pleistocene Shorelines (PDF), Fact Sheet (Legacy 05-260) (PDF)

This one page summary describes the projects three objectives: The first objective was to establish a paleo maritime landform model for North America that would determine the potential for paleo shorelines. The second objective was to evaluate DoD property to develop a list of installations that would have the potential for paleo maritime archeological sites and examine their collections for evidence. The third objective was to establish a paleo maritime website in order to encourage archeologists from across North America to re-examine their own sites and collections as part of the hypothesis testing process.

Historic Context for Historic Period, Archaeological Sites on Virginias Coastal Plain (PDF), Report (Legacy 05-262) (PDF)

There are many DOD facilities on the Coastal plain of Virginia.  Each of those installations has a responsibility to determine the significance of all of the historic period archaeological sites under their control.    This study develops scientific standards of significance for historic period archaeological sites on the Coastal plain of Virginia in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.  This will allow sites on DoD installation within the Coastal Plain of Virginia to view the historic period archaeological sites under their control in a large context.
