PEACHTREE CITY, GA — August 18, 2010 — Dr. Linda Curtis, Area Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools (DoDDS)-Cuba, announced today that Dr. Vicki Gilmer has been named principal of Fort Rucker Elementary School (FRES), at Fort Rucker, Ala., in the Georgia/Alabama District. She replaces Mrs. Barbara Doherty who recently retired.

Gilmer has over 20 years experience as a DoDEA teacher and administrator. She has taught kindergarten, first grade, second grade, Reading Recovery and was the assistant principal at FRES. Most recently Gilmer was the Instruction Support (IS) teacher at Fort Rucker Primary School (FRPS). In addition to her IS teaching duties, she served as chair of the Continuous School Improvement Leadership Team at FRPS. Under her leadership, the FRPS was rated “highly functional” in five of the seven AdvancED Standards during the school’s recent accreditation visit.

“We’re very pleased that Vicki Gilmer has taken the reins as principal at Fort Rucker Elementary School,” said Dr. Fordyce Stone, Georgia/Alabama District Interim Superintendent. “She knows Fort Rucker and the families. Her experience, energy, instructional knowledge and love for the students will make this leadership change seamless.”

Gilmer earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Alabama, her master’s degree from Troy University and her doctorate from Auburn University. She and her husband, Shawn, reside in Enterprise, Ala., with their two children, Delaney and Sam.
