Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress

Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress (CSTS) has been at the forefront of research focusing on the psychological effects and health consequences of exposure to traumatic events arising from war, disasters, terrorism and public health threats. CSTS, part of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) and its department of psychiatry, is a center of Defense Centers of Excellence for Psychological Health and Traumatic Brain Injury (DCoE). Through these collaborations, CSTS brings scholarly and research-oriented problem solving to the psychological health concerns of the Defense Department and the nation.

About the Military

U.S. Military 101 The "Basics" of the United States Military Reserve members fall within one of the four main branches of the military: Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Navy. Each branch has a group of reserves, but only the Air Force and Army attain a National Guard. In times of conflict and war, the President can call to duty all members of the reserves, but requires state approval for activation of the National Guard.

Message from our Founder

Panetta: "We will not tolerate actions that belittle, that haze, that ostracize any individual, particularly those that made the decision to seek professional help.”

October 2012

October 7 marked the 11th anniversary of the beginning of the Afghanistan war. The unending sacrifice of the members of our military service and their families and friends is astounding. Taking care of the many that are still in the battle and to the scores who have returned with battle scars is paramount. We all wait patiently while the Commander in Chief works to bring the rest of our troops home. When they return, we will have a massive job to do to ensure their readjustment, reintegration, and overall health and wellbeing. Over the summer there were a little over 33,000 servicewomen and men who returned home to their friends and families. My commitment at You Are Strong! is to continue my mission as a mental health and wellness professional to advocate for their sustainable recovery. I have a steadfast commitment to our veterans and their families. I advocate for their improved benefits, access to physical and mental health care that is effective, and to their health and human services needs.
