Operating Room Nurse

Career Description

The Air Force operates surgery centers around the world, from high-tech permanent suites to emergency facilities erected for disaster relief. As an Operating Room Nurse, you'll work in these environments alongside other highly skilled professionals. With your officer rank, you'll be treated with respect and afforded privileges and responsibilities not seen in the civilian world.

Career Tasks

  • Plan, direct and coordinate activities of the operating room department
  • Provide professional nursing care to patients undergoing surgery
  • Prepare and maintain the operating room for all surgical procedures and assemble the type and quantity of materials and special equipment needed for daily procedures and possible emergencies
  • Conduct both preoperative and postoperative visits with patients
  • Coordinate with other hospital units, which may include recovery room, intensive care, obstetrics and nursing units, to ensure patients' progress

Becoming a Direct Commission Officer

To ease your transition into the Air Force, you'll enter a five-week training regimen designed to educate you on the ways of both the military and military healthcare. You'll participate in physical conditioning five days a week, leadership training and classroom studies.
