Allied Forces express sympathy for Polish losses

MONS, Belgium —The Allied Command Operations and Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe community expressed its condolences to the Polish people and armed forces by having all NATO member flags fly at half-mast outside SHAPE headquarters April 12.

The flags will again fly at half-mast on the day of the president's funeral scheduled for April 17.

Killed in the April 10 plane crash were Polish president Lech Kaczynski and Mrs. Kaczynski and the entire high command of the Polish armed forces, including Poland's Deputy Foreign and Defence ministers, two deputy speakers of parliament, its military chief of staff and its army, navy and air force commanders, as well as Poland's central bank governor.

In a personal note posted on his blog, Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Admiral James Stavridis, expressed his condolences over the death of the Polish Chief of Defence, General Franciszek Gagor, whom the admiral visited in December.
