USS Stout Holds Change of Command
MEDITERRANEAN SEA — Capt. Dan Shaffer, commander of Task Force 65 and commanding officer of USS Stout (DDG 65), turned over command of the ship to Cmdr. Sylvester Steele during a change of command ceremony held at sea, March 6.
During the ceremony, Shaffer provided words of encouragement and praised the crew for their many successes.
“I challenged the crew to focus as a team on the mission of this ship and they responded instantly with a flawless sea detail, reformed watch and training teams, and with so much enthusiasm during drills it kept me awake all night,” said Shaffer.
Since being on deployment, Stout has provided operational support to exercises Relentless Shield and Proud Manta in addition to routine operations.
Shaffer assumed command of Stout on March 1 to ensure continuity of operations and command while Steele was en route from Norfolk, Va.
Steele most recently served as the executive officer aboard USS Ramage (DDG 61). His sea tours have included USS Arthur W. Radford (DD 968), USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51), USS Roosevelt (DDG 80) and staff operations officer for commander of Destroyer Squadron 24. Originally from Austin Texas, Steele is a 1995 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He holds a master’s degree in industrial management from the University of Arkansas and a master’s degree in national security and strategic studies from the National War College.
