GROTON, Conn. (NNS) -- With only 77 days until the 2012 presidential election, Commander, Submarine Group 2's voting assistance officer is encouraging all Sailors to be more informed about voting this election season.

The Federal Voting Assistance Program website recommends that military members complete their Federal Post Card Applications on a yearly basis and submit it in January of each year or whenever the service member has moved.

"While it's your right to vote, it's your duty as an American citizen to be informed," said Senior Chief Electrician's Mate (SS) Stephen Brooke, who has served as the COMSUBGRU 2 voting assistance officer for more than a year.

Brooke added that regardless of your party affiliation, voting assistance officers are encouraging all Sailors about their right to vote - absentee or in person.

"Many people think they are registered to vote, but they aren't," said Brooke, who said visiting fvap.gov's website only takes a few minutes, to one, find out if you are registered to vote and, two, submit the proper paperwork to essentially vote in the November elections.

Brooke added that Sailors who are voting absentee should request a ballot at least 90 days before Election Day, but they should act quickly and get registered to vote before the November elections. He added that states and territories are required by law to mail the ballots at least 45 days before an election.
