Today, there are more than 264 million personal computers in the United States alone (Computer Almanac 2008) and more than 98 million American workers use a computer on a daily basis (2001 U.S. Census). This widespread computer use has fueled growing complaints of eye strain and fatigue. The AOA reports that 14 percent of all optometric patients report computer-related symptoms and more than 10 million eye examinations are given annually in response to these complaints. With the range and scope of computer use increasing annually, it is important to understand the causes of CVS and how it can be managed.

Immunizations not just for kids

Children are not the only people who need immunizations-young adults to senior citizens can benefit from immunizations, too. Many adults become ill, disabled or die each year from diseases that could easily have been prevented by being immunized. Immunizations also benefit people in the community where immunized persons live or work, putting fewer numbers of people at risk by preventing the spread of diseases. Diseases like influenza (flu), tetanus and measles can cost Soldiers, families and civilian personnel time and money because of doctor visits, lost duty and work time, and hospitalizations.

Soldiers from the 450th Civil Affairs Battalion (Airborne), from Riverdale, Md., participated in a three-day battle assembly that focused on civil military operations, March 18 through 20, at Fort Pickett, Va. The Soldiers were immersed in real-life scenarios that allowed them to engage with foreign local populace, foreign law enforcement, and foreign officials. They were sent on missions to conduct local assessments of land that could be used for displaced civilians, as well as checking out a local lumber yard for any information they could gather on the importance of the mill.

When Barbara Hill retired March 1, 2002, she had served the federal government for more than 25 years. At the time, some of her friends wondered what she would do with her free time. "Several people I know quite well said, 'Are you sure you're doing the right thing' I don't know what I would do if I retired,'" said Hill. It's before dawn and most of the Soldiers on Hunter Army Airfield are either still asleep or just getting out of bed. But, behind a mahogany desk sits a man enclosed by four walls that bear a visual recording of his journey in the Army. His office is adorned with coins, plaques, photographs and other memorabilia dating back to deployments to Grenada, Panama and Iraq, to name a few. These plaques describe a life committed to the service of his country and to the Soldiers he loves. He arrives everyday at 5 a.m. so he can get a jump on the day prior to his 6:30 a.m. physical training.
