Michael Zalewski, a mechanical engineer with the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, deployed to Bagram Airfield from September 2011 to February 2012. He supported Operation Enduring Freedom by reducing the logistics burden of fuel on Soldiers. Zalewski served as the power and energy subject matter expert for the RDECOM Field Assistance in Science and Technology-Center, or RFAST-C, which brings civilian engineers and technicians to a central location to provide scientific solutions directly in theater.

    Eight high school robotics teams mentored by engineers at the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center (ARDEC) competed March 31st to April 1st at the Mount Olive High School in some friendly robot basketball. The teams participated in a competition called "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology" (FIRST), which challenges student teams to design, build and compete against one another with a remote-controlled robot capable of picking up and shooting basketballs.

Her work involves protecting Soldiers on the battlefield while also making weapons more effective. Last week she spoke to a group of science students at her alma mater, Cameron University, where she was quick to tell her audience that when she was growing up in Lawton, she never saw herself as a scientist.

    ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. -- About 50 senior U.S. Army science and technology officials discussed new methods to bring capabilities to Soldiers faster April 24. During the Science, Technology, and Engineering Executive Forum, uniformed and civilian leaders from across the Army focused on implementing faster and less expensive methods to transition research and development. Dale A. Ormond, director of the U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, said his goal is to improve the ability to field technology by better understanding the Army's program executive offices' needs.

    Recently, the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md. (APG) hosted an exploratory discussion visit with representatives from the Direction Générale de l'Armement (DGA), French Ministry of Defense, headed by Brig. Gen. Dominique Luzeaux, director for Land Systems Acquisition. The French delegation provided an overview of the DGA Land Systems, mission, responsibilities and current international activities with the U.S. and other international partners. At the end of the visit, Brig. Gen. Luzeaux expressed his appreciation and recognition of ARL as a leading defense research facility and his support for future cooperation between ARL and DGA.

Considering the research center is operated by the U.S. Army Armament Research Development and Engineering Center, which deems itself the Army's "Center for Lethality," Reisman's proclamation could pose a serious threat to Picatinny's deer and bear population. Fortunately, her quarry isn't four-legged but rather the academic or military book, specification, article, technical report or manual that could bolster a scientist's theory or channel a project in a new direction.     Recently, the Directed Energy to DC (DE2DC) Exhibition event was held in the Congressional Rayburn House Building in Washington, D.C. The Directed Energy Professional Society organized and executed logistic arrangements under the sponsorship and support of the Congressional Directed Energy Caucus and the High Energy Laser-Joint Technology Office (HEL-JTO). Dr. Jiang Liu and Mr. Gary Carhart of ARL's Computational and Information Sciences Directorate presented the innovative internal phase-locking 7 and 19-channel fiber laser array system developed under ARL mission and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency and HEL-JTO programs.
