Heavy Mobile Equipment Mechanic

Grade: 11

Overhauls and repairs complex electric or combustion-powered heavy duty vehicles and heavy mobile equipment such as locomotives, locomotive cranes, portal or dock and floating cranes, aircraft crash cranes, and diesel electric floating derricks. Repair work includes overhauling or rebuilding and other major repair of varied and complicated systems such as the following: diesel, gasoline, and other types of engines; automatic and non-automatic transmissions; heavy duty drive line systems; and hydraulic utility systems and controls. May also repair equipment such as bulldozers, road graders, power shovels, crawler tractors, and fire trucks.

Typical tasks performed:

Traces and locates defects and causes of mechanical problems, using a wide range of diagnostic and test equipment; determines type and extent of necessary repairs. On a regular and recurring basis, diagnoses difficult problems and improvises replacement, assembly, repair, and troubleshooting techniques when standard procedures are not sufficient. Selects and complies with appropriate repair specifications and procedures or improvises when available guidelines do not apply. Fits and installs to precise tolerances such parts as pistons, valves, bearings, gears, and cylinders. Modifies components for use or replacement into systems for which not specifically designed. Makes changes or modifications in accordance with specifications and guidelines when they are available. Connects, meshes, aligns, and adjusts items and complex systems to assure proper operation of the complete system or vehicle. May make field repairs as necessary.

Exclude:

Employees who specialize in the repair and overhaul of automobiles, semi-trailer truck tractors, and other over-the-road trucks, warehouse tractors and forklifts, and vehicles whose major systems are more similar to those of passenger cars and over-the-road trucks.
