    It's no secret that the 82nd Airborne Division separates itself from fighting forces around the globe by way of its proud history and unmatched competency. It is the combination of the Division's ability to look back and learn from its standard-setting pioneer Paratroopers in concert with the modern flexibility, physical toughness, and mental acuity that define today's Paratrooper keeping the 82nd Airborne Division legacy alive.

    The operational capacity of the 82nd Airborne Division was on parade during the capstone event of the 2011 All American Week, the Joint Operational Access Demonstration, May 20, 2011 at Sicily Drop Zone on Fort Bragg, N.C. Static displays turned the Sicily Drop Zone into a mobile Airborne Museum, giving the public a chance to see the latest technologies deployed in the division's global engagements. Vehicles, weapons, reconnaissance equipment - even a nine-man airborne infantry squad - were available for the public to learn about and interact with. At noon, paratroopers put on an aerial performance, executing a "heavy drop" of parachuting vehicles followed by a simulated combat jump. Spectators in bleachers and lawnchairs lined the perimeter of Sicily Drop Zone, cameras skyward, clicking away at a line of shrooming green parachutes carrying the All-American paratroopers to the ground.

    FORT BRAGG, N.C. - Eight Paratroopers ran to the helicopter, their heads bowed against the whipping wind from the propellers. The jumpmaster hooked each jumper to the floor of the UH-60 Blackhawk and signaled to the pilot that his men were ready to go. The aircraft ascended to approximately 1,200 feet. As it neared its destination, the jumpers were given their commands, checked their equipment, and anxiously awaited the command of "Go!"

In telling them about the Base Realignment and Closure-directed relocation of FORSCOM & U.S. Army Reserve Command Headquarters to Fort Bragg, N.C., Garrett explained that the three guiding considerations in accomplishing the move have been to maintain continuity of operations, retain or recruit a highly capable workforce and take care of people as they make the move and settle in. FORSCOM is moving from Fort McPherson, Ga., in accordance with the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) legislation.

    Regardless of where they're fighting, operating or training, Soldiers require supplies to accomplish their mission. The Supply Excellence Award recognizes those who keep the Army moving by providing superior supply operations for the active Army, National Guard and Reserve components. The SEA program started in 1986 to highlight the critical role sustainers play in supporting the warfighter. The purpose is to increase the logistical readiness of all Army units; enforce the Command Supply Discipline Program; encourage the use of available resources; and provide a structure for recognition of group and individual initiatives.

    Thirty-four teams continued on to day 2 of the 28th Annual Best Ranger Competition on Todd Field at Fort Benning, Ga. Day 2 consists of Ranger Day Stakes, which use skills every Ranger should know, including shooting, first aid, climbing and rappeling. The events are executed round-robin style as Ranger teams rotate from one event to the next. At the conclusion of the Day Stakes events, teams begin a foot march of more than 12 miles.

    Action resumed Saturday morning at the David E. Grange Jr. Best Ranger Competition - after a tumultuous night of thunderstorms rocked the local area. Ironically, the weather left the field more intact than in previous years at this stage as officials were forced to delay the start of the night orienteering course, a grueling 10-mile trek that wreaks havoc on competitors.

    Fifty teams kicked off the 28th annual Best Ranger Competition with a three-mile buddy run before dawn today. The teams head into a foot movement and canoe race to round out the morning. Events are scheduled around the clock, with teams moving to the firing ranges in the afternoon to conduct machine gun and moving target events before heading out for day orienteering, fast-rope insertion and their first obstacle course. The day ends with teams navigating an approximately ten mile night orienteering course well into the early hours of Day 2. "It's the greatest thing in the Army ... I look forward to it each year," said retired Col. Ralph Puckett, a former Ranger and two-time Distinguished Service Cross recipient who will be on the sidelines throughout most of the competition. "When you come out to Benning, you walk with giants. They're not rock stars, they're not sports heroes, they're not actors playing Soldiers. They're the real deal."

    A Fort Bragg Soldier has accepted the challenge of the Death Race, called an extreme match of "Survivor" meets "Jackass," and the tasks include diving into deep waters for a bicycle chain to assembling a lego house according to specs and the absurdity of the tasks is considered part of the excitement. It is a punishing competition where only 10 percent of contestants finish.

    The 11th annual Armed Services YMCA's Healthy Kids Day was held on April 9, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. About 1800 children chose from physical recreation like jumping around in a bouncer, throwing frisbees, basketballs and baseballs and crawling through a smoke-filled trailer.     The Soldiers of the 528th Combat Operational Stress Control Unit will be taking over combat stress operations that involve using dogs for therapy overseas. The 528th trained with therapy dogs from America's VetDogs and their trainers, March 28 to April 1. The training involved getting comfortable with the therapy dogs, simple commands, safety of the dogs, interacting with patients, and preparing to take care of the therapy dogs overseas.

  • Best Ranger Competition kicks off with run

    Fifty teams kicked off the 28th annual Best Ranger Competition with a three-mile buddy run before dawn today. The teams head into a foot movement and canoe race to round out the morning. Events are scheduled around the clock, with teams moving to the firing ranges in the afternoon to conduct machine gun and moving target events before heading out for day orienteering, fast-rope insertion and their first obstacle course. The day ends with teams navigating an approximately ten mile night orienteering course well into the early hours of Day 2.

The Airborne Battle Memorial commemorates every major parachute and glider combat assault carried out by U.S. paratroopers and glidermen, from Operation Torch in 1942 during World War II to Operation Northern Delay eight years ago in Iraq.

Starcher received honors during a retirement ceremony here in the FORSCOM Headquarters building for more than a half century of service to the U.S. Army. Starcher will conclude nearly 53 years of combined military and civilian service upon officially retiring July 30, 2011. Maj. Gen. Raymond V. Mason, FORSCOM G4, hosted the ceremony and rendered remarks pertaining to Starcher's career accomplishments. "We are a better Army and we are a better G4 team because of your service," said Mason. "To the family, we owe you a debt of gratitude that our nation can not ever pay."
