However, this is not always what defines the person in uniform. There is often something much deeper brewing beyond the maroon beret and the rank. Perhaps the individual wearing the ACU defines the uniform more than the uniform defines the individual.

Now days, Stevenson spends her time helping as many people as she can along with raising two children alone while her husband is deployed. Needless to say, many would argue Stevenson is in fact a wonder woman. On a clear, cool night the 9th Brigade, Iraqi Special Operation Forces hosted a dinner for the 407th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade of the 82nd Airborne Division at Al-Asad Air Base, Iraq, Sept. 28. A video showing the ISOF in action during a simulated improvised explosive attack, clearing a room and evacuating a wounded soldier was played for senior leaders of 407th BSB before the meal.

He used his love and interest for serving up the best possible meal for his customers, earning him the position of kitchen manager eight years later. A distress call comes in through the radios of a helicopter on fire. Firefighters respond by placing a fire truck at a 90 degree angle away from the front of the aircraft. Using hand lines, a team creates an entry way towards the aircraft, while the other team secures the inside of the aircraft extracting an injured pilot. The casualty is taken to a triage area where medics treat him. Meanwhile, the firefighters perform a second check of the aircraft to ensure no other passengers or crew members are left behind or thrown out and to declare the aircraft safe.

Fifty teams kicked off the 28th annual Best Ranger Competition with a three-mile buddy run before dawn today. The teams head into a foot movement and canoe race to round out the morning. Events are scheduled around the clock, with teams moving to the firing ranges in the afternoon to conduct machine gun and moving target events before heading out for day orienteering, fast-rope insertion and their first obstacle course. The day ends with teams navigating an approximately ten mile night orienteering course well into the early hours of Day 2. "It's the greatest thing in the Army ... I look forward to it each year," said retired Col. Ralph Puckett, a former Ranger and two-time Distinguished Service Cross recipient who will be on the sidelines throughout most of the competition. "When you come out to Benning, you walk with giants. They're not rock stars, they're not sports heroes, they're not actors playing Soldiers. They're the real deal."

A Fort Bragg Soldier has accepted the challenge of the Death Race, called an extreme match of "Survivor" meets "Jackass," and the tasks include diving into deep waters for a bicycle chain to assembling a lego house according to specs and the absurdity of the tasks is considered part of the excitement. It is a punishing competition where only 10 percent of contestants finish.

The 11th annual Armed Services YMCA's Healthy Kids Day was held on April 9, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. About 1800 children chose from physical recreation like jumping around in a bouncer, throwing frisbees, basketballs and baseballs and crawling through a smoke-filled trailer. Other activities included tye-dying T-shirts, building cars and birdhouses, having one's face painted or making colorful chalk drawings.

The Soldiers of the 528th Combat Operational Stress Control Unit will be taking over combat stress operations that involve using dogs for therapy overseas. The 528th trained with therapy dogs from America's VetDogs and their trainers, March 28 to April 1. The training involved getting comfortable with the therapy dogs, simple commands, safety of the dogs, interacting with patients, and preparing to take care of the therapy dogs overseas.

Nearly 200 seniors did not let a little rain dampen their spirits as they participated in the Mid-Carolina Senior Games, March 30, at Pope Fitness Center. The games, in its 25th year, are held each spring to promote wellness for adults age 55 and older. Some of the games seniors participated in included basketball, spin casting, football throw, softball throw, discus, shot put, bowling, tennis, swimming, billiards, bocce and track events.

The USO of North Carolina, Fort Bragg Center director announced that a new USO center will open this summer at the Fayetteville Regional Airport. The center will become a reality thanks to a $35,000 grant from the Cannon Foundation and will have a snack bar, a television with a DVD, Internet access and telephones.

On March 30, parents and providers brought their children Tolsen Youth Activities Center, for either a morning or an afternoon session for Nutrition Fest, a day of fun and festivities designed to entertain children of all ages. Children rotated through the two gyms at Tolson for dancing along with step instructors, decorating crafts, tackling an obstacle course and raising the decibel scale a few notches.

Children from 8 to 14 years now have a place to let off steam after school. Fort Bragg and Pope Field's Armed Services YMCA officially opened their new 'Tween' Center, March 31. The Tween Center offers supervised tween fun and has three flatscreens with Wii systems, Dance Dance Revolution, karaoke, numerous board games and a snack bar.

Victory Junction is a way to get away from everyday life and focus on having fun for Soldiers and their Families. In 2004, the Richard Petty Family built Victory Junction in memory of Adam Petty, Kyle's son who died in a NASCAR race. The camp has much to offer children with special needs as well as survivors. Things such as catch and release fishing, canoeing, bowling, a gymnasium, and a small water park.

The Department of Emergency Medicine at Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg is the only Army medical center that offers a comprehensive program for victims of sexual assault. Sexual assault nurse examiners are a team of 12 nurses, primarily based in the Emergency Department and other clinical areas of WAMC, who are specially trained to meet victims' medical, emotional and legal requirement. Additionally, they ensure compliance with all laws and Army regulations.
