  • Residents reminded about Mountain Lion presence

Story by Presidio of Monterey Public Affairs

PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. – Recent mountain lion sightings serve as a reminder to local residents to remain vigilant in keeping an eye on pets. Why are there mountain lions in the area?

It's not because mountain lions, also known as cougars or pumas, like humans. In fact, according to the California Department of Fish and Game website they are solitary and elusive, and their nature is to avoid humans.

With more than half of California mountain lion habitat, and mountain lions generally existing wherever deer are found...

The North American Cougar, also known as a Mountain Lion or Puma, is considered to use more than half of California for habitat and primarily feed on deer.

  • Army announces Prescribed Burn Intent for 2012

The Army has identified Unit 10 in the former Fort Ord Impact Area as part of its 2012 Prescribed Burn Plan to clear vegetation. After the vegetation is burned, munitions-removal experts will then be able to more safely enter the area to remove unexploded munitions and explosives remaining from when Soldiers trained at Fort Ord when it was an active base.

The Army intends to conduct a prescribed burn and begin removing military munitions as soon as weather permits (but not before July 1). A prescribed burn may commence when conditions provide for efficient execution and best management of the resulting smoke, in order to minimize the impact to local communities and residents. The date for the burn will depend on optimal conditions, including: clear skies, moderate temperatures (between 45° and 90°), and a few days without much wind.

The Army will announce when suitable prescribed burn conditions are considered imminent and again when the prescribed burn is ignited. Direct notification will be provided by email, text, and/or auto-dialer telephone calls for anyone who wants to receive such notification.

Residents who want to be placed on the list for direct notification may contact the Army at 800-852-9699, or download an enrollment form at www.FortOrdCleanup.com. Notification forms should be returned prior to July 1, 2012, if possible.
