DoD/VA Clinical Practice Guidelines

The VA/DoD EBPWG has adopted the Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence clinical practice guideline developed by the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS), 2008 Update.External link  This guideline describes the critical decision points in the Management of Tobacco Use and provides clear and comprehensive evidence based recommendations incorporating current information and practices for practitioners throughout the DoD and VA Health Care systems. Initiatives

Combating Tobacco use in Military and Veteran Populations

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) provides recommendations to the Department of Defense (DoD) and Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) on improving the health of active duty and veteran populations with regard to tobacco use initiation and cessation. In its 2009 report, Combating Tobacco in Military and Veteran Populations External link , the authoring committee concludes that to prevent initiation and encourage cessation, both DoD and VA should implement comprehensive tobacco-cessation programs.

DoD Tobacco Use Prevention Strategic Plan

The 1999 plan External link states a goal to reduce smoking rates by 5% a year and to reduce smokeless tobacco use rate by 15% by 2001.

Alcohol Substance Misuse Advisory Committee (ASMAC)

The ASMAC is a DoD subject matter expert representative committee that addresses substance abuse DoD-wide to include tobacco use and alcohol abuse.
