DLIFLC

Directorate of Continuing Education

Continuing Education has the goal of providing superior post-basic foreign language instruction via resident and non-resident programs to the approximately 30,000 DoD and other U.S. government personnel each year to assure full linguist mission readiness. Established in 2000 to meet the proficiency enhancement needs of the DoD language professional population, CE’s mission has dramatically grown to embrace some of DLIFLC’s highest visibility mission areas, such as providing language familiarization training to forces deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as managing satellite DLIFLC training detachments around the world.

The school became a directorate in November 2003 at the DoD Center – Monterey Bay with the consolidation of the intermediate and advanced language courses, previously conducted alongside the DLIFC basic course at the Presidio of Monterey. High demand for advanced intensive resident and non-resident language training has prompted continuous expansion, ultimately leading to the recent creation of four new internal organizations: Resident Instruction, Distance Learning, Extension Programs Division, and the Field Support Division.

The School of Resident Instruction provides intermediate, advanced, and refresher courses in Korean, Chinese, Spanish, Russian, Hebrew, Arabic, Persian Farsi, and Serbian/Croatian to over 120 students a year at the DoD Center. These languages may vary over time and represent the high-density requirements of the moment.  This school also deploys Mobile Training Teams (MTTs) to take language instruction to locations where there are concentrations of professional linguists.

Because language professionals in the field can often not find enough time to sustain and enhance their knowledge of language, CE established a School of Distance Learning, which is comprised of a cadre of instructors who use Video Tele-Training (VTT), the Broadband Language Training System (BLTS) and other delivery platforms to provide online training to students around the world.  Click HERE for the BLTS Brochure.

DLIFLC’s Extension Programs Division emerged as an outgrowth of Distance Learning and led to the establishing of permanent Language Training Detachments (LTDs) at several locations around the world with heavy concentrations of language professionals. By bringing language training to students, CE supports worldwide DoD language missions, while at the same time minimizing stress on the units and families of language professionals.

Field Support Division has the mission of supporting non-linguist warfighters and other General Purpose Force foreign language familiarization requirements, while also supporting the specialized the 09L Combat Interpreter/Translator Program.
