Sector: 11 - Forestry, fishing, hunting, & agricultural support services
The Nonemployer sector of forestry, fishing, hunting, and agricultural support services
is comprised of establishments primarily engaged in only three activities:
1) harvesting timber, 2) harvesting fish and other animals from their natural habitats,
3) providing support activities for crop, animal, and forestry activities that does not
lead to agricultural production. Examples of support activities include such duties as
cotton ginning, soil preparation, planting, breeding services for animals, pedigree
record services, boarding horses, dairy herd improvement activities, livestock spraying,
sheep dipping and shearing, estimating timber, forest firefighting, forest pest control,
and consulting on wood attributes and reforestation.
It is important to realize that nonemployer data for this sector EXCLUDES all forms of
agricultural production (as they are covered by the census of agriculture conducted by
the U.S. Department of Agriculture). Therefore, any establishments referred to as farms,
ranches, dairies, greenhouses, nurseries, orchards, or hatcheries are considered production
based and eliminated from the totals of this sector.
Also excluded from the forestry, fishing, hunting, and agricultural support services
sector are establishments primarily engaged in agricultural research (as they are classified
in Industry 5417 - Scientific Research and Development Services).
