Whether it's at your local Air Guard unit or in a temporary disaster relief facility, electricity is vital to Air Guard operations. As an Electrical Power Production Specialist, it'll be your job to get it there and to keep the power supply fully functional. You'll undergo extensive training and become a highly skilled expert in your field training that directly transfers into the civilian world, and can be used to start a career as an electrician outside of the Air Guard.

Electrical Power Production Specialists are specially trained in:

  • Principles of electronics and electricity, including generation, conversion, transformation, distribution, and utilization
  • Types, capacity, and purpose of high and low voltage circuits, circuit breakers, switches, fuses, regulators, relays, instruments, and meters associated with electric generation and distribution
  • Interpreting instrument and meter readings
  • Wiring diagrams, schematics, drawings, and technical publications
  • Techniques of operating and maintaining internal combustion engines, generators, generating plants, distribution panels, and accessory equipment
  • Repair and maintenance of aircraft arresting systems
  • Use and purpose of test equipment
  • Safety rules and practices
  • Environmental policies
  • Principles of management
  • Operation and repair of electrical power production systems
  • Must have normal color vision

After eight-and-a-half weeks of Basic Military Training, every Airman goes to technical training to learn their career. Training school locations and length can vary by position; please contact your recruiter for this information.

As a member of the Air Guard, you'll be eligible for low-cost health insurance for you and your family, along with low-cost life insurance, so you know your loved ones are protected. These Insurances include:

  • TRICARE Dental Insurance - The only dental plan sponsored by the Department of Defense (DoD) for National Guard/Reserve sponsors and their families. With the TDP, you will enjoy a nationwide network of more than 65,000 participating dentists, high-quality customer service and comprehensive dental coverage designed specifically with you in mind!

  • TRICARE Medical Insurance - Medical Coverage is available in different options necessary to meet the needs of different individuals. From individuals to families insurance is available for those in full time or part time status to ensure coverage is available. Families and Part-time members coverage is offered through TRICARE Reserve Select and is a premium-based health plan available worldwide to Selected Reserve members of the Ready Reserve (and their families) who are not eligible for, or enrolled in the Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB) program.

As a member of the Air Guard, you're eligible to receive educational benefits through the Montgomery G.I. Bill where you could be eligible to receive money for college. This program is a free benefit for all individuals that join for 6 years.
