Purpose

 
Acoustic Hailing Device Aboard Ship Non-lethal weapons play a critical role in missions across the range of military operations. The purpose of the Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program is to provide warfighters a family of non-lethal weapon systems with a range of capabilities across the full spectrum of threats and crises.  

Department of Defense Definition of Non-Lethal Weapons

The Department of Defense defines non-lethal weapons as weapons, devices and munitions that are explicitly designed and primarily employed to immediately incapacitate targeted personnel or materiel, while minimizing fatalities, permanent injury to personnel, and undesired damage to property in the target area or environment. Non-lethal weapons are intended to have reversible effects on personnel and materiel. Non-lethal weapons are designed and employed to achieve military objectives while minimizing human casualties or damage to property and equipment.

Mission

The Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Directorate will facilitate meeting the current and future less-lethal force application and force protection needs of warfighters across the spectrum of operations by:
 

  • Identifying and understanding current and projected operational requirements and capability gaps.
  • Concepts, lessons learned, urgent needs, etc.

  • Identifying and developing technologies into operationally suitable and effective less-lethal solutions that are cost-effective.
  • Science and technology, research and development, testing potential solutions vs. gaps (metrics), etc.

  • Facilitating the acquisition and fielding of less-lethal capabilities.
  • Supportability (including "Soldier's" Load), industrial base, acquisition process, etc.

  • Advancing awareness through strategic communication and support for education and training.
  • Policy and public understanding and acceptability, support for symposia, etc.

  • Efficiently managing resources and support.
  • Resources allocations, program administration, etc.

Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program Logo The Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program logo has a shield as a symbol of protection. A sword poised in a download position representing non-lethal military protection of life and peace separates the four stars-one for each of the Services. The four stars are white, and the two halves of the shield are red and blue to represent the United States of America while the olive branches are symbols of peace. The insignia is presented over the earth, symbolic of our global commitments.
 
The Joint Non-Lethal Weapons Program's Latin motto, Pax Custimus-Vita Custimus," is loosely translated as "Safeguarding Peace-Safeguarding Life."
