  2. This afternoon I was happy to join Bowie High School in celebrating the class of 1962, as this year marks their 50th Reunion! It was pleasure to meet each and every person who was present, and I was happy to honor our veterans with a flag that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol. I am honored to be your Representative, thank you for allowing me to participate in wonderful events like this!

  3. During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we remember those who have lost their lives to breast cancer, and those who are battling it now, by recommitting ourselves to their fight and spreading the word of the importance of prevention ...
    and early detection. I encourage all women to get a mammogram since the chance of successful treatment is highest when breast cancer is detected early. You can click on the link below to find local resources available in our community.

  4. I received this letter from the Association of Public Television Stations and I wanted to share it with all.

    During the debate, Governor Romney called for the elimination of federal funding for public broadcasting.

    We thought it was critical to take a moment to set the record straight.

    While federal support for public broadcasting is roughly one one-hundredth of one percent of the budget, tha...
    t funding is critical to sustaining the public broadcasting system.

    * Eliminating federal funding for public broadcasting would end public broadcasting as we know it.

    A Government Accountability Office (GAO) study and a Congressionally mandated CPB study both found that there is no substitute for federal funding to fulfill the educational mission that lies at the heart of public television.

    * The vast majority of federal funding for public broadcasting goes directly to support the operations of local stations, many of which are the last locally-owned and locally-operated media outlets in their communities.

    The federal investment is approximately 15 percent of local public television stations' budgets, but for many smaller and rural stations, federal funding can be 30-50 percent of their total budget.
    A loss of federal funding would dramatically impact all stations, forcing them to curtail their programming and community outreach efforts. However, many stations, particularly small and rural stations, would most likely be forced off the air.

    * The American public broadly supports federal funding for public broadcasting -- as was clearly evidenced in the groundswell of social media support that arose in the minutes and hours after Governor Romney proposed eliminating funding.

    Polls show that 69 percent of American voters across the political spectrum oppose eliminating funding for public broadcasting, including nearly 50 percent of self-identified Tea-Party supporters, 56 percent of Republicans and nearly 70 percent of Independents.

    Further polling shows that Americans consider PBS to be the second most appropriate expenditure of public funds, behind only national defense and the most trusted institution for the 9th year in a row.

    * Public Broadcasting is in the business of public service -- providing content and services to local communities that are not available anywhere else. These include:

    tested and proven, non-commercial, children's educational content that reaches 4 out of 5 kids ages 2-8;
    standards-based, curriculum-aligned interactive digital learning materials that are revolutionizing the teaching and learning experience in classrooms nationwide;
    local public affairs, and in-depth historical and cultural programming;
    lifelong learning opportunities ranging from virtual high schools to GED high-school diploma equivalency programs to job training programs; and
    deployment of broadcast spectrum in public safety and homeland security partnerships nationwide.

    Public broadcasting treats viewers as citizens not consumers.

    Public broadcasting services are not luxuries; they are essential services that 170 Million Americans rely on every month.

    The American public stands with us in their support of continued federal funding for public broadcasting, and we hope that Congress will too.

    Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions about public broadcasting, or if you are interested in arranging a tour of your local public television stations we would be more than happy to assist you in setting that up.

    Thank you for your consideration.

  5. Today’s unemployment numbers are encouraging and show that President Obama and Democrats in Congress have done their part in helping to create jobs and revitalize our economy. Unemployment is down to 7.8 percent for the month of September and we added 114,000 jobs during the same time period. We cannot stop now, we must continue to work together to create jobs for all in this country.

    raised is usually what will determine its temper, there is no such thing as a "bad breed." Pit Bulls can be loveable, loyal, and fun companions but like with all large and strong breeds, families with small children should always be cautious around Pit Bulls. I encourage all of El Paso to put aside their preconceived notions and open their hearts to the idea of adopting a Pit Bull. We can help to make sure there is not one unloved, abandoned or abused pet in our community, please take a stand with me and visit the El Paso Humane Society today.

  7. These scholarships will help provide more El Pasoans access to education, so they can become the next generation of doctors, scientists, engineers, professors and researchers. Education can open new doors and opportunities for all, and that is why I am a staunch supporter of scholarships and opportunities for those who most need them.
  8. Some of the funds allocated today are made possible through the health care reform law, also known as the Affordable Care Act, and I am very proud to have supported this important legislation that is improving lives by ensuring access to quality and affordable health care for El Pasoans. These grants will help Project Vida meet the growing health care needs of our community.
  9. Today is National Voter Registration Day and I would like to remind everyone to make sure you are registered for the upcoming November election. In 2008, 6 million Americans didn't vote because they missed a registration deadline or didn't...
    know how to register. Voting gives all the opportunity to be heard, to hold elected officials accountable for their decisions and to have a say in important issues that affect your community.

  11. Sun Metro continues to grow and expand, and these federal funds come at a critical time in the development of transportation services to make public transit available and accessible to El Pasoans. We must continue to improve Sun Metro to ensure El Pasoans have access to multiple routes throughout the city and region. I will continue to support projects that provide federal funds to Sun Metro.
