This is the fourth report in an annual series on the condition of America's children. |
Abstract:
The report looks at the status of all children under age 18 living in the United States. It includes 8 contextual measures that describe the changing population, family characteristics, and context in which children are living, and 23 indicators of well-being in the area of economic security, health, behavior and social environment and education. The indicators were chosen because they are: easy to understand; objectively based; balanced; measured regularly; and representative of large segments of the population. In addition, the report presents special features on kindergartners' knowledge and skills and youth participation in volunteer activities. Data for the key indicators were drawn primarily from national surveys and from vital records. In many cases data on children by race and Hispanic origin are also included. The report can be found on the World Wide Web at http://www.childstats.gov. Figures, notes, appendixes, tables, data sources |
