Terminating Coverage

Your coverage may be terminated for a number of reasons, both voluntary or involuntary.

Voluntary Termination
You may choose to end your coverage at any time. Take the following actions to end your coverage:

  1. Log on to the DMDC Reserve Component Purchased TRICARE Application and follow the instructions to "Disenroll."
  2. Complete the Reserve Component Health Coverage Request Form (DD Form 2896-1)
  3. Print, sign and mail your completed form to your regional contractor.

The effective end date is either the last day of the month in which the request was postmarked or received, or the last day of a specified future month. A 12-month purchase lockout will apply if you voluntarily end your coverage, which means you will not be able to repurchase TRICARE Reserve Select for up to one year.

If you want to terminate your coverage, do not just stop making payments. If you do not take action to terminate and you simply stop making premium payments, your coverage will be suspended. However, you are still responsible for any premium amounts that are due prior to the date your coverage officially ended.

Non-Payment of Monthly Premiums
Your payment must be received no later than the last business day of each month. Failure to pay monthly premiums on time will result in suspension of coverage. If your coverage is suspended due to nonpayment, contact your regional contractor immediately to see if your coverage can be reinstated.

Remember, if you normally pay your monthly premium payments with a check, you must convert your payments to electronic funds transfer (EFT) or a recurring debit/credit card payment to be effective January 1, 2013. Please contact your regional contractor for details.

Change in FEHB Eligibility or Enrollment
You must take action (see steps above) to end coverage if you become eligible for or enrolled in the FEHB program. No purchase lockout will apply. If you fail to end coverage as required, your Reserve component may terminate your coverage, and you will be responsible for any health care received after the effective date of termination.

Sponsor is Activated
When the sponsor is called to active duty for more than 30 consecutive days under Federal orders, you become eligible for TRICARE (without premiums) and the TRS coverage is automatically terminated. Any unused premiums already paid will be refunded, and the 12-month purchase lockout does not apply.

Loss of Eligibility
TRS coverage is automatically terminated if the sponsor no longer qualifies or separates from the Selected Reserve or lose eligibility for any other reason.

Family member coverage is terminated if they lose eligibility for TRICARE due to marriage, aging out, or any other reason.
