Enrollment Access Standards

When you enroll in TRICARE Prime, you should expect to drive no more than 30 minutes for primary care and no more than 60 minutes for specialty care.

Enrolling at Military Treatment Facilities (MTFs)
Based on the MTF's capacity and capabilities, each MTF will make a decision on whether or not it will accept TRICARE Prime enrollments for beneficiaries who live outside the 30 minute drive time. Check with your local TRICARE Service Center to determine if assignment to the MTF is possible.

If the MTF is willing to accept enrollment beyond 100 miles, the enrollment must be approved by your TRICARE Regional Office.

  • If you are able to enroll to an MTF outside of the access standards, you must sign the Access to Care waiver section of the enrollment form (section V). When this section is signed, you are acknowledging that your drive time to primary care may exceed 30 minutes and drive time to specialty care may exceed 60 minutes.
  • If you are unable to enroll at an MTF, you'll need to enroll with a network primary care manager.

What happens if I live more than 100 miles from the MTF?
If you live more than 100 miles from the MTF, the MTF and your TRICARE Regional Office will decide whether you will be able to continue your MTF enrollment. If your MTF assignment is not approved, you will need to select a network primary care manager. If you do not select a network primary care manager, one will be selected for you and you will be automatically reassigned.

What if a request is denied or a waiver is not renewed at the end of an enrollment period?
There may be several other TRICARE options. These may include:

  • enrolling at another MTF in the area if available;
  • enrolling with a civilian PCM for beneficiaries living in or within 100 miles of a Prime Service Area if approved; or
  • enrolling in the US Family Health Plan if it is available.

If TRICARE Prime is no longer an option, you still retain TRICARE coverage under the TRICARE Standard and Extra option. TRICARE Standard is the most flexible of the TRICARE options and is available everywhere. TRICARE Extra is a discount given to TRICARE Standard beneficiaries when a TRICARE network provider is used. Both of these are excellent options with high satisfaction rates. The benefit package now includes some preventive services and very reasonable annual deductibles and co-payments. Note: These access standards do not apply to active duty service members.
