TRICARE Reserve Select
TRICARE Reserve Select is a premium-based health plan available worldwide to Selected Reserve members of the Ready Reserve (and their families) who are not eligible for or enrolled in the Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB) program (as defined in Chapter 89 of Title 5 U.S.C) or currently covered under FEHB, either under their own eligibility or through a family member.
Note: Those members in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) including Navy Reserve Voluntary Training Units (VTU) do not qualify to purchase TRS.
Purchasing TRS is a two-step process that you must complete online.
Step 1: Qualify
- Log on to the DMDC Reserve Component Purchased TRICARE Application
- Select "Purchase Coverage" and follow the instructions.
- Print and sign the completed Reserve Component Health Coverage Request Form (DD Form 2896-1).
To log into the DMDC Reserve Component Purchased TRICARE Application, you must have one of the following:
- Common Access Card (CAC)
- DFAS (MyPay) Account
- DoD Self-Service Logon (DS Logon) Premium (Level 2) account.
The DS Logon Premium (Level 2) account is given to a user who has registered using their CAC, DFAS myPay Login ID, or has a DS Logon Basic Account. Click here to sign up or view information regarding a DS Logon.
If you do not qualify, you will not be able to complete or print the form. Please contact your National Guard or Reserve personnel office for assistance. If you experience a technical problem, call 1-800-477-8227 for assistance.
Step 2: Purchase
You may purchase the plan at any time throughout the year. Mail or fax your completed Reserve Component Health Coverage Request Form (DD Form 2896-1) along with the initial premium payment (equal to two months) to your regional contractor within the specified deadline.
After the initial payment, your premium payment is due no later than the last day of the month for the next month's coverage. If you miss a payment due dates, your coverage will be terminated due to nonpayment. When this occurs, a 12-month purchase lockout will go into effect. >>Learn More about Monthly Premium Payments

When Coverage Begins
You may purchase coverage to begin in any month of the year.
- Your Reserve Component Health Coverage Request Form must be postmarked or received no later than the last day of the month before coverage is to begin.
- Coverage begins on the first day of the first or second month (whichever you select on the form).
If losing coverage under another TRICARE health plan option, you can purchase TRS with no break in coverage.
- Your Reserve Component Health Coverage Request Form must be postmarked or received no later than 30 days after the loss of other TRICARE coverage.
- Coverage begins on the first day after you lose the other coverage.
Application deadlines and effective dates of coverage will vary if you have changes in family composition such as marriage, birth/adoption or a sponsor's death.
