Disenrolling

Enrollment in TRICARE Prime is continuous. You do not have to re-enroll every year to continue coverage, but certain events will cause you to be disenrolled from TRICARE Prime.

Sponsor Status Change
Any change in your sponsor's status (e.g., active duty service member retires or National Guard/Reserve member deactivates) will cause you to be automatically disenrolled from TRICARE Prime. If you are still eligible for TRICARE Prime after the status change, you must submit a new enrollment application to your regional contractor before the status change occurs to avoid a lapse in coverage.

Note: If your sponsor's status is changing from active duty to retired, you will be required to pay annual enrollment fees to continue enrollment in TRICARE Prime.

Non-Payment of Enrollment Fees
Failure to pay your TRICARE Prime enrollment fees will result in disenrollment and you will be unable to re-enroll in TRICARE Prime for one year.

Gaining Medicare Eligibility at Age 65
When you become eligible for Medicare Part A due to age, you automatically lose eligibility for TRICARE Prime and may use TRICARE For Life if you have Medicare Part B coverage. >>Learn More

Voluntary Disenrollment
If you choose to disenroll from TRICARE Prime before the annual enrollment renewal date, you are not allowed to re-enroll for one year. Contact your regional contractor to initiate a voluntary disenrollment.

Note: Active duty service members may not voluntarily disenroll from TRICARE Prime.

Loss of Eligibility
If you lose eligibility for TRICARE, your TRICARE Prime coverage will automatically end. You will receive a certificate of creditable coverage when TRICARE eligibility is lost.  The certificate of creditable coverage serves as proof of insurance so you cannot be excluded from a new health plan for pre-existing conditions.

Upon loss of eligibility, you will qualify for transitional health care benefits under the Continued Health Care Benefit Program.
