Boswell Participating in Farm Bill Field Hearing Today

Iowa farmer provides testimony on need for strong conservation programs

Galesburg, Illinois – Congressman Leonard Boswell (IA-3) today participated in the House Agriculture Committee’s field hearing at Carl Sandburg College in Galesburg, Illinois. Committee members received input from producers as they work towards crafting the next Farm Bill.

“Today I heard from producers across the Midwest who share my sentiments that a farm bill must provide a support system with a strong conservation title that enables farmers and ranchers to continue to provide the safest, most plentiful and affordable food supply in the world. All Americans have a vested interest in their success,” Boswell said.

“Among our panelists was Iowan Jane Weber, a small farmer from Bettendorf who provided my colleagues and I with a great perspective on the need for diversified farming and conservation programs.”

Mrs. Weber highlighted the importance of maintaining conservation programs which have proven their worth especially in the wake of flood events.

“Four years ago, the Cedar and Iowa Rivers flooded along with the Mississippi River devastating the towns of Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Columbus Junction, and Oakville in eastern Iowa along with cropland in the waters' path,” Weber testified.

“Where conservation structures were not in place, soil was being carried downstream along with the flood waters. However, where two, three, or more conservation practices occurred on farmland the water damage was not as significant. Less soil left the area. In other words, the conservation practices worked.”

“Getting out into the country and hearing from our farmers and ranchers directly on how farm policies are affecting their livelihood is absolutely essential as we begin this critical work to develop a Farm Bill that will benefit agriculture for every American,” Boswell said. “Mrs. Weber understands just how important this next Farm Bill is – and how Congress needs to give a good-faith effort to get this legislation passed to avoid the repercussions of an extension or lame duck action.”
