SPD SECOND LONGITUDINAL FILE USER NOTES

NOVEMBER 13, 2002

DUPLICATE VARIABLES - PAID AND HIPAID

The 2nd Longitudinal Survey of Program Dynamics (SPD) Data contained two health insurance variables which were found to be the same. HIPAID is a duplicate of the PAID variable. The occurrence of two variables containing the same information can be traced back to the Current Population Survey (CPS), from which the bridge survey instrument fielded in 1997 was based. The CPS health insurance field contained the same variables, PAID and HIPAID, with HIPAID a duplicate of PAID. There is no reason to have both variables; therefore future files will exclude the variable HIPAID.
