Special Invitation From Congressman Murphy: Join Me Tomorrow for Commissary Groundbreaking in Moon Township!

Dear Friend,

Tomorrow marks a very special day for our Southwestern Pennsylvania military families, veterans, residents, and neighbors. I invite you to join me at the ceremony to break ground on the new military commissary in Moon Township at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, August 17.

This effort has been six years in the making and I’m thrilled the moment has finally arrived and to share it with you!

As you may recall, in the 2005 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (BRAC) report, the Charles E. Kelly Support Facility (CEKSF) in Oakdale was slated for closure. Closing the facility meant that 168,000 eligible military personnel and veterans in Southwestern Pennsylvania would also lose access to the commissary, post exchange, and military clothing sales store.

We worked together in 2005 to get language in the BRAC report preventing the military from closing the commissary. Then we got to work on securing the funding and needed approvals from the Pentagon to build a replacement. It’s been a long and difficult road but we worked together to make this new facility a reality for our region’s military families and veterans. The new commissary facility will be adjacent to the 316th US Army Reserve in Moon Township. The site is at the intersection of University Boulevard and Business 376 across the street from the old Pittsburgh International Airport terminal.

Immediately following the ceremony, a reception will be held at the 316th US Army Reserve in Moon Township, which is located adjacent to the new facility. Please join me. I look forward to seeing you there.

WHAT:          Military Commissary Groundbreaking Ceremony and Reception

WHO:           Congressman Tim Murphy (PA-18)

WHEN:         Friday, August 17, 2012 at 10:00 a.m.

WHERE:       99 Soldier Lane, Moon Township, PA 15108 (across the street from the site of the old Greater Pittsburgh Airport terminal)

About The Commissary:

Commissaries provide access to discounted groceries to military personnel, retirees, and their families. Authorized patrons can purchase items at cost plus a five percent surcharge (to cover the expenses of operating, modernizing, and building commissaries). Families save an average of more than thirty percent on purchases compared to commercial prices, which can amount to thousands of dollars saved annually for our service members.
