What is Public Service Loan Forgiveness?

The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program was created to encourage individuals to enter and continue to work full-time in public service jobs. Under this program, you may qualify for forgiveness of your eligible federal student loans if you are a fulltime employee of certain public service employers and make payments on your student loans for 10 years (120 months).

TIP: You generally must enroll in the Income Based Repayment plan (IBR) in order to benefit from Public Service Loan Forgiveness. To get started in IBR, check your servicer’s website or call to learn how to enroll.

Read the U.S. Department of Education’s Public Service Loan Forgiveness fact sheet for more information on the terms and conditions of the program and to understand what types of public service jobs qualify.
