CONGRESSMAN AUSTRIA STATEMENT ON AVOIDED GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

Washington, D.C. – Today Congressman Steve Austria (R – Beavercreek), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, released the following statement regarding the avoided government shutdown:

“People across America, and especially in Ohio, have spoken very clearly that Washington needs to cut spending and get our fiscal house in order.  Nearly 50 days ago the House of Representatives passed a long-term funding bill that included substantive cuts and would begin to put our nation on a fiscally-sustainable path forward.  Unfortunately, the Senate waited until time had run out to finally come to the table. Although reconciliation came at the eleventh hour, I was pleased that the agreement reached contains $38.5 billion in spending cuts, fully funds our men and women serving in our military and allows government to operate.”

“Even though we were able to move forward, the real fight will be next week when we address the 2012 budget which cuts nearly $6 trillion over the next 10 years and will begin to put our country back on a fiscally-sustainable path to help create jobs and strengthen the economy for future generations.”

“I applaud House Speaker John Boehner for his efforts to reach a deal that includes substantial cuts and fully funds our troops.”
