CONGRESSMAN AUSTRIA CALLS FOR IMMEDIATE ACTION ON BALANCED BUDGET AMENDMENT
Friday November 18, 2011WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today Congressman Steve Austria (R – Beavercreek) voted in favor of a Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution (H. J. Res. 2) and called for its immediate passage in the House and Senate. This resolution – of which Congressman Austria is a co-sponsor – is the same Balanced Budget Amendment that passed the House in 1995 with 300 bipartisan votes and has already received bipartisan support.
“Our nation is facing a debt crisis that threatens our economy, national security and our children’s future. Families in Ohio and across this nation are tightening their own belts and must live within their means, and it is time that the federal government do the same with American’s hard-earned tax dollars. The solution to this financial crisis must include a Balanced Budget Amendment that will require Congress to live within its means and reduce our nation’s debt. This is what the American people expect, and Congress must move forward with a Balanced Budget Amendment.”
Earlier this year, Congressman Austria strongly supported the Cut, Cap and Balance Act (H.R. 2560) as an original co-sponsor of the bill in dealing with the national debt. Cut, Cap and Balance passed the House in July and was aimed at cutting current federal spending levels, capping future spending by Congress and balancing our nations budget through a Balanced Budget Amendment. H. J. Res. 2 requires Congress not spend more than it receives in revenues while also providing a limited exception in times of war and serious military conflicts.
