More than 100 run/walk at Eleanor mesothelioma fundraiser
Missy Bowles, founder/organizer of the third annual ROD's Benefit 5K Run/Walk for Meso, has declared the Sept. 22 event in Eleanor a great success in a number of areas.

Celesta Hill Bennett, 96, of Teays Valley, died Sept. 18, 2012, after a short illness. Service was held Sept. 24 at Bartlett-Burdette-Cox Funeral Home, Charleston, with her nephew, Michael J. Broadwater of Parkersburg, officiating. Burial followed in Elk Hills Memorial Park, Big Chimney.
Kanawha Valley DAR chapter sponsoring essay contests
The Kanawha Valley Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, is sponsoring two essay contests.
Confidence Elementary named National Blue Ribbon School
Superintendent of Schools Chuck Hatfield has announced that Confidence Elementary School has been named a National School of Excellence and will be awarded the Blue Ribbon at a ceremony in Washington, D.C., in November.
Church briefs
Pet Blessing: A pet blessing will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 7, at Cross of Grace Lutheran Church in Hurricane. Participants will meet in the rear of the church for a brief service, followed by the blessing of pets. All pets are welcome to attend and receive a blessing. The Cross of Grace Youth Group will provide treats for all pets. Representatives of the Putnam County Animal Shelter will be in attendance welcome any donations of supplies or money to the shelter. Cross of Grace is located below the Walmart in Hurricane.
